Keira's revealing new role
posted on 2007 Jul 20
There's one constituency of Keira Knightley's fans who won't be able to see her give her best screen performance to date, in the film of Ian McEwan's novel Atonement. For the children who dragged their parents to the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, Atonement will be off limits because of its adult subject matter and gripping, but bloody, scenes of injured WWII soldiers.

In the film, sublimely directed by Joe Wright working from Christopher Hampton's screenplay, Keira plays university graduate Cecilia who finds herself passionately in love with James McAvoy's Robbie, the handsome would-be doctor. One terrific scene shows McAvoy typing Cecilia a note revealing, in sexually explicit terms, his truest feelings for her, which he then, mistakenly, has delivered to her. Later she and McAvoy make love, keeping their clothes on, but all the zips and buttons are unfastened, in one of the most erotic moments that's likely to be seen on screen this year.

As the actress commented to me when I spoke to her on the set: "She's a grown-up and she does grown-up things. I was 17 when I started playing Elizabeth in the Pirate films and they were fun, but very much meant for families. Now I've grown up and so have the roles."

I caught Atonement a second time this week and I liked it even more than I did the first. It's the best film of the year. (If I see a better one then, of course, you'll be the first to know.) The performances - all of them - are outstanding. Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave play the three ages of Briony Tallis, Cecilia's younger sister who, by telling an untruth, sets the two lovers (Keira and McAvoy) off on a journey of love and tragedy.

Atonement opens the Venice Film Festival at the end of August and then goes on release here in September, making it more than eligible for the Golden Globe, Bafta and Oscar awards.

Ooh la la! It's Coco Keira - the new face of Chanel
posted on 2007 Jul 20
Forget the swashbuckling scenes with Johnny Depp - this is Keira Knightley as a very different femme fatale. The Pirates Of The Caribbean star is replacing fading supermodel Kate Moss as the face of Chanel, and these exclusive pictures show just why the French fashion house is paying her £500,000. But tomboy Keira, 22, has had to work hard at cultivating a new, sophisticated image since landing the highly coveted contract.

"Chanel's Coco is the first perfume I've ever worn," confessed the actress, who has been criticised in the past as being too skinny and scruffy to be a film legend.
Now she has scrubbed up nicely and is set to eclipse the Chanel old girls - Nicole Kidman, Catherine Deneuve and Vanessa Paradis - when the adverts are launched in September.

"We think Keira is perfect because she is always incredibly alluring and seductive," said a Chanel spokesman. "She would not have looked out of place in the Forties or Fifties, and that's why she was chosen - to show a timeless chic that will never fade."

Dating Keira can leave you without an identity!

Irish actor Jamie Dornan sometimes regrets even dating Keira Knightley, for he's now more well known for being her ex than his talents. Dornan dated Knightley for nearly two years before they called it quits in 2005.

However, he's a bit bitter that he's got stuck with the tag of being the Oscar nominee's ex boyfriend.
"People knew me in the fashion world before I started going out with Keira because I've done some good work but it's proving so hard to lose the stigma that's attached," Contactmusic quoted him, as saying.
"I can't shake off the title of Keira Knightley's ex-boyfriend. It frustrates me so much because Dave (Alexander, his bandmate in group Sons Of Jim) and I have been writing music together for five years, before I even met Keira, and getting places with it and creating awareness," he added.

Keira, Sienna and a curry on film
posted on 2007 Jun 26
When Renee Zellwegger had to pile on the pounds to fill her Bridget Jones granny pants, she told of struggling to consume a calorie-rich diet every day. But I hear whippet-thin Keira Knightley, who has been told to fatten up for her role in her new movie The Edge Of Love, is enjoying every one of her four daily meals on location in west Wales.

Keira, seen right with her co-star Sienna Miller, has been munching her way through huge amounts of food to make sure she keeps her weight up.
'Both Keira and Sienna have bigger appetites than many of the men on set,' says my Welsh spy. 'Keira was told to beef up for the role and she and Sienna have both been having food competitions to see who can eat the most.

'At the moment they are on a curry diet where they have curries for lunch and dinner, and eggs Benedict for breakfast.'
It's a hard life.

Keira Knightley's 'Atonement' to open Venice Film Festival
posted on 2007 Jun 19
Actress Keira Knightley's upcoming flick 'Atonement' has been selected as the opening film at this year's Venice Film Festival. The 2007 British film based on Ian McEwan's novel by the same name is director Joe Wright's second release.
As for how Wright felt about the honour given to his film, the newcomer insisted that going to the Venice film festival is a dream come true and the feeling is 'extraordinary'.

"Going to the Venice Film Festival is something one dreams of. It is just steeped in history. I keep imagining I'll bump into Sophia Loren," the BBC quoted Wright, as saying. He however refused to comment on the chances of the film winning major awards this year but insisted that 'opening Venice' is in itself a great honour. "Opening Venice is a prize in itself," said Wright.

Wright's first film 'Pride and Prejudice' bagged him the 'Best Newcomer' award at BAFTA, and the film was also nominated for four Oscar nominations in 2006 including a best actress nod for Knightley. The director feels that Knightley has given her best performance ever in the new film.
"She's developing as an actress all the time and I think her performance here is the best thing she has ever done," Wright added.

The 22-year-old actress will reportedly attend the world premiere of the 2007 British film on 29 August. According to film festival head Marco Muller, this will be the first time that a 'young' director's film will open the film festival. "For the first time in its history, the opening film is the work of a young director," Muller said.

Muller insisted that Wright's film is so good that it could beat the techniques employed by many acclaimed directors. "It is a film that, in terms of emotive and visual power, is greater than some of the major films of many acclaimed directors," he added.

Sienna, Keira swap showbiz parties for board games
posted on 2007 Jun 19
Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley have swapped showbiz parties for board games. The actresses, who are currently filming 'The Edge of Love' in Wales, have been shunning nights on the town in favour of backgammon tournaments.

A source told Australia's New Weekly magazine, "Sienna is big on board games and she has got Keira hooked too. They think it's hilarious because people assume they would be out on the town every night but instead they are cosied up like a couple of old men, getting all competitive over the backgammon board. "Sienna says she prefers it to a big celebrity party any day."

Sienna, 25, and Keira, 22, have become good friends since they were cast in the movie about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, which was written by Keira's mother Sharman Macdonald. The film will see the two beauties share a steamy scene with co-star Matthew Rhys, who plays the late poet.

Sienna recently gushed of her blossoming friendship with the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star. She said, "I love Keira. She is so nice and she gets me and where I'm coming from. We always chat about how weird the public attention is and boys. I've found a new friend for life. I've had a real blast hanging around with Keira."
